New Year, New Ideas in Care

As we usher in a brand new year, we at Coastal Orthopedics invite you to take a look at our new ideas in orthopedic care. You’ll find new treatments for everything from migraines to back pain, joint problems to chronic pain. Here is a quick look at some of the newer treatments we have to offer and how they can help.

New migraine treatments. The specialists at Coastal Orthopedics are always looking for new treatments that can provide effective relief from the serious pain of migraine headaches. A new medication on the horizon — Aimovig (or erenumab)— is a first-of-its kind medication designed to actually prevent migraine attacks from occurring. In addition to medication, we offer cervical injections, occipital nerve injections and injections into the nerves of the neck that can ease pain.

New treatments for back pain. A new option for patients living with back pain from the sacroiliac area—and for whom non-surgical treatments have not worked— is SI joint fusion with the iFuse implant system. Coastal Orthopedics was the first center in Manatee County to perform this procedure. A minimally invasive procedure, iFuse can alleviate pain quickly and get patients back on their feet faster than traditional back surgery.

Another newer technique than can provide relief of chronic back pain is a spinal cord stimulator. A small wire is implanted under the skin and connected to a power source that transmits low-level electrical impulses to the spinal cord or to specific nerves to block pain signals from reaching the brain.

Coastal Orthopedics also offers facet radiofrequency to treat nerve pain in the back. This procedure stops the nerves from transmitting signals about facet joint pain, essentially “turning off” the nerve so pain cannot occur. The treatment, which takes about 30 minutes to complete, can provide pain relief for about a year but can last much longer for some people.

New ideas in pain management. For patients with spinal stenosis have typically found few or no effective treatment options. But now, a lumbar decompression device called the Superior Interspinous Spacer can help. This device is implanted in a minimally invasive surgery designed to relieve the chronic pain of spinal stenosis through decompression. In 2018, we were the first in Manatee County to perform this procedure.

New options for knee pain. Doctors at Coastal Orthopedics can offer knee patients the innovative Synvisc-One injection. This single-dose treatment injects a gel-like substance directly into the knee to replace the fluid in the knee joint. It takes only a few minutes and is performed right in the office. Synvisc –One has been found to be more effective than steroid injections for many people with osteoarthritis.

New regenerative medicine treatments. Regenerative medicine uses the natural substances, proteins or cells generated by your own body to repair damaged tissues safely, quickly and effectively. The idea behind this cutting-edge treatment is to encourage the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  There are three different forms of regenerative medicine the board-certified specialists at Coastal Orthopedics use:

  1. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)—using healing, growth-promoting substances drawn from your own blood;
  2. Cell-Based Medicine (Mesenchymal Stem Cells)—using cells harvested from your own bone marrow or fatty tissue; and

All of these treatments are performed as outpatient procedures, so they involve a shorter recovery process and less pain than traditional surgeries. Regenerative medicine techniques can help patients with a wide variety of orthopedic issues, including tendonitis, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome—even torn ligaments and injured joints.
