Earning a spot amongst the nation’s top surgery centers doesn’t come easy, but Coastal Orthopedics did just that, standing out as one of only 19 other ambulatory surgery centers in Florida recognized for excellence in orthopedics and spine care. That level of distinction starts with a patient-first approach and a commitment to innovation. With the facility offering same-day surgery and being equipped with advanced medical technology, physicians at Coastal Orthopedics can perform highly specialized procedures tailored to each patient’s unique needs. But the innovation doesn’t stop there.
Housed within the 88,000-square-foot headquarters are surgical suites, as well as a full spectrum of orthopedic care services, including clinical offices, a physical therapy department, advanced imaging with MRI, and administrative support. “I think what got us here is the way we approached the entire business,” said Dr. Lamar, orthopedic surgeon and physician president of the surgery center. “We looked at it from the patient’s perspective from the very beginning. That started with how we designed the facility, making sure it was laid out in a way that made sense and felt comfortable throughout the patient journey.”
Coastal Orthopedics’ surgery center relocated to its current location on State Road 64 in 2022 to better serve its patients who live in the rapidly growing Manatee and Sarasota counties. “We created a warm, welcoming reception area, space for families to wait and really tried to make the whole experience smooth and accommodating,” said Dr. Lamar. “Our thinking was that if we delivered an exceptional experience, patient demand would follow. That was the foundation of our approach, and I think it’s why we’ve been successful.”
In addition to fostering an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care and enhancing the health and well-being of its patients, Coastal Orthopedics has implemented several cutting-edge technology options over the years to expand its offerings. The full-service provider currently uses surgical robots and mixed reality 3D hologram technology, as well as incorporated a dedicated clinical research department that works with study participants for clinical trials to test effectiveness of medical products and techniques.
Most recently, Coastal Orthopedics expanded its surgical spine offerings to include Carlsmed® Aprevo®, the only FDA-designated breakthrough technology for intervertebral spine fusion. Aprevo utilizes advanced algorithms and state-of-the-art 3D modeling to develop personalized surgical plans and spinal implant devices. “We’re pretty proactive about adopting new technology when we believe it benefits patients,” said Dr. Lamar. “Our approach is simple: If a surgeon believes a technology improves how we deliver care, we take a serious look at it.”
Outside of the technology aspect, the physicians at Coastal Orthopedics are also always thinking with innovation in mind. Earlier this year, Dr. Avi Kumar, board-certified orthopedic surgeon, invented a new plate called the netBiologics Gaudi Plate to treat shoulder fractures, and surgically treated his first patient with the device. Currently, Dr. Kumar is the only orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. using the Gaudi Plate for internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures.
