What is an Independent Medical Exam?

An Independent Medical Examination (IME) is an objective, third-party evaluation conducted by a physician who has no prior doctor-patient relationship with the individual being examined. The purpose of an IME is not to provide treatment, but to render an impartial medical opinion to help resolve questions in a workers’ compensation, personal injury, or disability case. Our experienced physicians provide thorough, evidence-based assessments to bring clarity to all parties involved.

What to Know About an IME

  • A Thorough Record Review: Before your appointment, the physician will have performed a comprehensive review of all medical records related to your case.
  • A Detailed Medical Interview: The physician will ask you specific questions about the history of your injury or condition, your symptoms, your work, and how your daily life has been affected.
  • A Focused Physical Exam: The physician will conduct a physical examination tailored to your specific injury to assess your current physical condition and capabilities.
  • An Objective Evaluation, Not Treatment: The examining physician’s role is to be an impartial evaluator. They will not prescribe medication, provide medical advice, or become your treating doctor.
