Arthroscopy is a relatively simple outpatient procedure utilized by orthopedic surgeons to diagnose and treat problems relating to the joint. The term “arthroscopy” stems from the Greek words “arthro” and “skopein”: Loosely translated, it means “to look inside the joint.”

In recent years, arthroscopy has received much positive attention for its success in treating some of the most well-known names in sports. However, it is a highly beneficial procedure for individuals in all activity levels as well as all age groups, as it is usually shorter and more easily endured than an “open” joint surgery.

When is Arthroscopy Done?

In addition to being used as a diagnostic tool, arthroscopy can performed as a standalone surgery or in combination with other surgical procedures for the treatment of joint-related problems, such as,

  • Inflammation
  • Acute or chronic injury
  • Fractures
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Meniscus tears
  • Ligament tears
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • And many more.

Although the primary focus of modern arthroscopy are the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist joints, more joints may be treated as the technology progresses in the future.

How Arthroscopy is Performed

Under local or general anesthesia – depending on the location of the injury – a small incision is made and a miniature camera is inserted into the area. The imagery is transmitted to a screen viewed by the doctor, allowing him/her to evaluate the problem closely. Once the appropriate treatment plan has been determined, the surgery is performed on the incision site with miniature tools.

When the surgery has been completed, most patients recover quickly with little to no pain medication and are sent home. Post-operative instructions are provided based on your individual needs, and a rehabilitation program is discussed at a follow-up visit.
